Camino Day 7 - Los Arcos to Logroño - 17.2 miles
WE HIT 100 MILES ON FOOT TODAY.
Today was our first "big" day. 17 miles on foot is a pretty hefty distance. I think we're getting pretty well conditioned though because we covered it in about eight and a half hours. The terrain is definitely getting more flat and sparse which is to be expected. We've left the Nevarre region of Spain and passed into Rioja, with the city of Burgos and the Meseta only five days away. The Meseta is known for its endless flat wheat fields and can be intimidating but I personally am looking forward to the challenge, but there's still some time before we get there.
Logroño is incredible. We got lucky and happened to arrive during a festival, a "Renaissance Fair" of sorts, complete with a parade of reenactors in full medieval Spanish military garb. The cafes are great, particularly those that offer a surprisingly refreshing drink called Calimocho, a match made in heaven of local red wine and Coke over ice. I know it sounds weird at first, but it basically tastes like a carbonated sangria and it's LOVELY.
Tomorrow is a bigger day, 18.4 miles to Najera. I'm ready.
Buen Camino.
